Book Summary

A proven drug-free program addressing the cause—not just the symptoms—of Autism Spectrum Disorders and related conditions.

Each year, an estimated 1.5 million children are diagnosed with autism, Asperger’s syndrome, ADHD, dyslexia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. But even as rates rise, diagnosis and treatment have not changed in 50 years. Since psychiatric drugs, given to more than 20% of elementary school children today, don’t cure them, doctors tell parents these dysfunctions will never disappear.

Enter Dr. Robert Melillo and his new understanding of the causes of these disorders: a disconnection between the left and right sides of the developing brain. His revolutionary Brain Balance™ program has achieved documented results, dramatically improving children’s and families’ quality of life. Since 1998, nearly 1,000 children have completed the Brain Balance™ program with remarkable success—behavioral, emotional, academic, and social. Written in an accessible style, Disconnected Kids shows parents how to use this drug- free approach at home, with customizable exercises for physical, sensory, and academic performance, advice for behavior modification, information on foods to avoid, and a follow-up program for lasting results.

I have seen Disconnected Kids described as a marketing book. That was not the intent, and that information came straight from the horses mouth. The reason for the detailed information on the Brain Balance program is so that anyone can duplicate it for free (the assessment is difficult to do, the program is much easier. An assessment costs less than a new TV). Do you know anyone who has spent enormous amounts of money on research only to give away the information for free? I don't. The reason that there was not much empirical evidence to start was that it takes time for other institutions to get interested in the topic, raise money for research, get it approved and print it. Be skeptical absolutely, but don't limit yourself when reading reviews of people who haven't put their kids through the program. There are 3rd party peer reviewed articles now, and the program is not a quick fix. It takes a lot of work to change the brain. Dr. Melillo does not own most of these centers. The majority are owned by people who spent 3 months in another city, put their children through Brain Balance, then moved back home to open a center because of the difference it made. Wouldn't it be sad to find out years later, that the treatment worked and it's too late because your child's brain is now fully developed and you only listened to they nay sayers? Traditional medicine wants to treat everyone with drugs, some with horrible side affects and that don't work after a year. It takes time for a new idea/treatment to be accepted. Some doctors still don't recommend vitamins. The knowledge gained in neuroscience is changing so fast now that by the time a textbook is published, it is out of date. We CAN change the brain. It is now well known that learning new information and regular exercise changes neurons. There are other books on Brain Balance, and a ton more information on neuroscience. Be skeptical, but educate yourselves with scientific information, not the opinion of those who have not taken the time to investigate deeper into the subject. I have taken the time not only to research this particular topic, but also how diet affects the brain. The child is tested for food intolerances, not just put on a diet removing generic problematic foods. Intolerances can cause inflammation in the brain, caused by the break down of the blood-brain barrier due to leaky gut syndrome. Remember that we all have different life experiences, education, knowledge and biases when reading reviews.
